PROJECT
We were instructed by Somerset County Council to support a full planning application for a two-form entry primary school for up to 420 pupils and a nursery for up to 52 children, located on land adjacent to Northfield in Somerton, Somerset. The proposals will replace the existing King Ina Academy Infants and Junior schools currently located in Somerton.
APPROACH
We were initially instructed to undertake a transport feasibility study to inform the suitability of the site. Subsequently, we prepared supporting documentation, including a Transport Assessment and Travel Plan to support the planning application. The methodology and inputs into the Transport Assessment were agreed with the local highway authority through pre-application discussions. The scope of work included the formulation of comprehensive Travel Plan measures to encourage the uptake of sustainable travel, the design of vehicular access arrangements and the onsite parking layout, parking analysis, trip generation and distribution calculations based on existing pupil movements, design and agreement of off-site pedestrian infrastructure and capacity analysis of the local transport network.
Our input included liaison with key local stakeholders including Somerset County Council, South Somerset District Council, Somerton Town Council and with members of the pubic at public consultation.
OUTCOME
Planning approval was secured in July 2019, following planning committee, where we spoke on behalf of the development.
