PROJECT

TPA was instructed to assess the transport planning and highway engineering implications of a proposed 2,333m2 extension to the existing Kensington Tesco store at 100 West Cromwell Road, Kensington in London to order to support a planning application.

APPROACH

The development was carefully integrated with the existing store and an existing residential development run by the Notting Hill Housing Trust. In order to support the new housing, a series of columns were introduced within the space currently occupied by a coach park, which would no longer allow for the parking and manoeuvring of coaches. In its place, new basement and mezzanine levels of car parking were introduced which would allow the removal of the existing car parking at ground floor level which, in turn, enable the extension of the store and the provision of the community facilities to the west of the public space.

OUTCOME

The scheme provides a network of routes that link through the site and into the surrounding streets and spaces both physically and visually, connecting the site to the existing and proposed development located to the north and south.
