MILL LANE AND MARSHAM LANE, GERRARDS CROSS

PROJECT

We were instructed by Gerrards Cross Town Council to support the introduction of pedestrian facilities and traffic calming measures on the Mill Lane and Marsham Lane rail bridges in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire.

Gerrards Cross is divided by the Chiltern Mainline, which runs east to west through the town. There are five bridges over the railway line, with three of the bridges providing facilities for pedestrians and two bridges providing no formal pedestrian facilities. As such, the proposals consist of introducing a traffic calming and pedestrian safety scheme on the two bridges with no formal pedestrian facilities. The aim of the scheme was to help facilitate improved access between the north and south of Gerrards Cross for pedestrians.

APPROACH

To support the planning application, we produced a Transport Statement and Design, Access and Planning Statement for both of the schemes. The reports set out relevant policies, the benefits of the proposals and the impact on the local highway network. It was concluded that the traffic calming and pedestrian safety schemes would not result in any impact, with the free flow of traffic on both bridges being maintained. In addition, the proposals would improve access and safety for pedestrians.

As part of our post-application negotiations with the local highway authority, we were required to commission a Stage 1 and 2 Road Safety Audit (RSA) for both of the proposed schemes. Following the RSAs, we provided Designers Response Reports and made minor design amendments, where necessary.

OUTCOME

Planning permission for both schemes was granted in March 2023.
