PROJECT

We were appointed by Ryebridge Construction on behalf of London Luton Airport (LLA) to undertake a number of Road Safety Audits for the proposed reconfiguration of its Mid-Term Car Park.

APPROACH

Works were proposed at the existing Mid-Term Car Park (MTCP) at Luton Airport to provide a one-way carriageway and footway around the perimeter of the existing car park, with reconfiguration of the car parking within the remainder of the site. This also provided a bus route with new bus stops and drop off points.

We carried out Road Safety Audits (RSA) at Stage 1 (Preliminary Design), Stage 2 (Detailed Design) and Stage 3 (Completion) of the design process. This included two Stage 3 RSAs; one pre-opening and one post-opening of the car park. All Road Safety Audits were carried out by our independent team of Road Safety Auditors, fully qualified in accordance with DMRB GG119.

Overall, the Stage 1 Audit raised six road safety issues. All issues and recommendations were accepted by the designer and the Stage 2 Audit subsequently raised only one road safety issue.

OUTCOME.

Following the completion of construction, the post-opening Stage 3 RSA found only minor road safety issues such as areas where patch resurfacing would be required or additional road markings.
